Welcome to Clive's Blog

Hi. I'm Clive Haworth. I'm the CEO of Robots in Schools and I spend some of my time developing the Edbot Software that lets you code your Edbot and Edbot Dream in Scratch, Python, JavaScript and more.

So why robotics? I grew up in the UK in the seventies and eighties watching shows like Star Trek and Space 1999. I loved the idea of a computer controlling a spaceship or running a moon base. I remember Blake's 7 featuring an irascible super-computer called Orac that was highly intelligent and seemed capable of controlling any other piece of tech it wanted. It was all extremely cool to me.

I got interested in electronics and built myself a Sinclair ZX-80. I learnt to program it and started adding bits of hardware. I remember wiring up one of those "brand-new" 7-segment LED displays and using bit-shifting code to make it light up in a circle. But all this was a long way from the stuff on TV. The idea of an intelligent computer-controlled robot seemed as far away as ever.

Fast forward to the present and it seems we're on the cusp of a real robotics revolution. Robot servos are getting more advanced and affordable. Coding algorithms are becoming more and more sophisticated. Voice recognition and synthesis is now an everyday technology.

But there's a problem. You need to be a serious developer with deep pockets to hook it all together... So we created Edbot to let kids into the party. Coding a robot is cool. Watching kids code a robot is even cooler.

We have lots of ideas to add more features to the Edbot Software and I thought it would be great to share these thoughts (and dreams) on everything Edbot with you. Maybe the next generation can make that leap to hyper-space!
