Edbot and Edbot Dream

Hi. I'm Clive Haworth. I'm the CEO of Robots in Schools and I spend some of my time developing the Edbot Software that lets you code your Edbot and Edbot Dream in Scratch, Python, JavaScript and more.

Adding voices to the Edbot Software on Windows 10

On Windows the Edbot Software uses the Microsoft Speech API (SAPI) to provide speech support. SAPI has been around for a while and works on earlier versions of Windows too. Microsoft sometimes refers to SAPI voices as 'Desktop voices'. Plain sailing...

Well not exactly. In its ill-fated efforts to enter the mobile market, Microsoft created a brand new speech system called OneCore. The voices were originally called 'Mobile voices'. The OneCore system has now been merged into Windows 10, so we have 2 completely different speech systems!

The problem is when you add a new voice in Windows 10 using the Settings app, you are actually adding OneCore voices, not SAPI voices. This means the voices appear unavailable to apps using SAPI including the Edbot Software.

But all is not lost. Read on to find out how to get your Edbot or Edbot Dream talking Bulgarian (or any other OneCore voice for that matter).

First you'll need to install the OneCore voice from Windows 10 Settings.

Select: Settings -> Time & Language -> Region & Language
Click on: Add a language
Choose any language displaying a Text-to-speech icon (circled in the image below) and click: Next

I'll choose Bulgarian.

The installation may take some time. Good opportunity for a coffee.
Once installed, make sure the Text-to-speech icon is displayed. If not click on Options and check the settings.

Next you'll need to make this OneCore voice available to SAPI.

To do this you'll need to copy the newly added voice to SAPI in the Windows registry. The standard Windows registry editor doesn't allow you to easily copy registry entries. A better choice is the excellent Registry Finder program written by Sergey Filippov:

Download and install Registry Finder. To make changes to the registry you'll need to run it as administrator. Do this by right-clicking on the Registry Finder icon and selecting: Run as administrator

Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Speech_OneCore\Voices\Tokens
Select your newly added voice. In my case: MSTTS_V110_bgBG_Ivan
Right click and select: Copy

Then navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Speech\Voices\Tokens
Right click and select: Paste

That's it. Close Registry Finder and restart the Edbot Software. Select Server Setup and you should find your new voice is available to use.

Късмет! (Good luck!)

DISCLAIMER: Edit the Windows registry at your own risk. Inappropriate changes to the registry can disable the operating system! To safeguard against such an accident, we recommend that you back up your existing registry by choosing File -> Export after launching Registry Finder and before making any changes.
